Diabetic Emergencies

If in doubt, give sugar. Low blood sugar (hypo) can kill within minutes.

Call 999 where appropriate

Hypoglycaemia (low sugar)

  • Symptoms: pale, sweaty, trembling, confused, aggressive, slurred speech.
  • If conscious: give sugary drink (not diet), glucose tablets, jelly babies.
  • Follow with slow carbs (biscuit, sandwich) once responsive.
  • If unconscious: recovery position, call 999. Do NOT give anything by mouth.

Hyperglycaemia (high sugar)

  • Symptoms: thirst, frequent urination, fruity breath, drowsy, deep breathing.
  • Slower onset (hours/days).
  • Call 999 if drowsy, vomiting or confused.

When in doubt

  • Assume hypo — give sugar. It won't harm a hyper significantly.
