Diabetic Emergencies
If in doubt, give sugar. Low blood sugar (hypo) can kill within minutes.
Hypoglycaemia (low sugar)
- Symptoms: pale, sweaty, trembling, confused, aggressive, slurred speech.
- If conscious: give sugary drink (not diet), glucose tablets, jelly babies.
- Follow with slow carbs (biscuit, sandwich) once responsive.
- If unconscious: recovery position, call 999. Do NOT give anything by mouth.
Hyperglycaemia (high sugar)
- Symptoms: thirst, frequent urination, fruity breath, drowsy, deep breathing.
- Slower onset (hours/days).
- Call 999 if drowsy, vomiting or confused.
When in doubt
- Assume hypo — give sugar. It won't harm a hyper significantly.
