Call 999 where appropriate

Suspect opioid overdose

  • Pinpoint pupils
  • Very slow / absent breathing
  • Blue lips or fingertips
  • Unresponsive to pain

Nasal (Nyxoid) steps

  • Call 999 first.
  • Tilt head back, insert nozzle into one nostril.
  • Press plunger firmly — full dose in one nostril.
  • Place in recovery position.
  • If no response in 2–3 minutes, give second dose in other nostril.

After naloxone

  • Casualty may wake abruptly, confused or agitated.
  • Effect wears off in 20–90 min — overdose can return. Stay until paramedics arrive.
  • Do not let casualty leave.

Safe if wrong

  • Naloxone only affects opioids — no harm if the drug wasn't an opioid.
