Emergency
Recovery Position
Position for an unresponsive person who IS breathing normally, to keep airway clear.
When to use
- Unresponsive but breathing normally
- Suspected overdose, seizure aftermath, heavy intoxication
Steps
- Kneel beside casualty. Straighten legs.
- Place nearest arm at right angle, palm up.
- Bring far arm across chest, back of hand to near cheek.
- Grip far thigh, pull knee up (foot flat on ground).
- Roll casualty toward you onto their side.
- Tilt head back to open airway. Adjust top knee to 90°.
- Monitor breathing continuously until help arrives.
What NOT to do
- Don't move if spinal injury suspected unless airway compromised
- Don't leave alone
