Recovery Position

high

Position for an unresponsive person who IS breathing normally, to keep airway clear.

Call 999 where appropriate

When to use

  • Unresponsive but breathing normally
  • Suspected overdose, seizure aftermath, heavy intoxication

Steps

  • Kneel beside casualty. Straighten legs.
  • Place nearest arm at right angle, palm up.
  • Bring far arm across chest, back of hand to near cheek.
  • Grip far thigh, pull knee up (foot flat on ground).
  • Roll casualty toward you onto their side.
  • Tilt head back to open airway. Adjust top knee to 90°.
  • Monitor breathing continuously until help arrives.

What NOT to do

  • Don't move if spinal injury suspected unless airway compromised
  • Don't leave alone
