Seizures

Protect from injury — do not restrain. Time the seizure.

Call 999 where appropriate

During the seizure

  • Note the time it started.
  • Move hard objects away. Cushion head.
  • Loosen tight clothing around neck.
  • Do NOT restrain, hold down, or put anything in mouth.

After the seizure

  • Place in recovery position.
  • Reassure — confusion is normal.
  • Check for injuries.
  • Stay with casualty until fully recovered.

Call 999 if

  • First seizure ever
  • Lasts more than 5 minutes
  • Second seizure without recovery in between
  • Injury sustained
  • Difficulty breathing after
  • Seizure in water
